Driving down the cost of waste-derived sugars
Funded by Innovate UK
Partners: Fiberight Ltd, Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), Rebio Technologies Ltd, University of Leeds, University of Bath, University of Aberystwyth, Aston University and Knauf Insulation
This collaborative project was funded by Innovate UK and enabled Fiberight to optimise its sugar hydrolysis process at the pilot scale, increasing the pilot scale carbohydrate conversion yields from 30% to over 70% with minimal enzyme input. The project also enabled Fiberight to test the sugar solution as a feedstock for a number of products including levulinic acid, ethanol, lactic acid and bio-resin. Finally, the project developed methods and equipment for online monitoring of sugar production and hydrolysate contamination by adventitious bacteria.
